Message From The President

“Make the Room More Than a Room”

Just a few days ago I read a story on Facebook, which was probably AI generated. The
message, “Make the room more than a room”, really resonated with me. Even though
the story was about a hotel, it made me think of our Temple Beth Sholom
congregation. Let me digress for just a moment.
Have you ever entered a restaurant, hotel, a meeting room, or even a sanctuary, and
instantly felt uncomfortable? It could have been due to how it looked. Or was it the
way you were greeted? Think about the restaurant and how the host’s biggest concern
was when his/her shift ends. The hotel registration employee who doesn’t make eye contact. The meeting room where you are unsure of where to sit. The sanctuary where
you were unnoticed and sat in the back.
What would make us feel differently about each of these rooms? How about, “We’re so
glad you’re here with us this evening!” “Welcome to your home away from home.”
“Why don’t you come and sit with me?” “Welcome, come and join us for this evening’s
service.”
I put my sanctuary example last because that is why I thought of our congregation.
Over and over again I have talked to people who have attended services in a
synagogue or church and felt overlooked and unwelcomed. However, that does not
happen in our case. Before we get started, guests are welcomed outside first and then
inside. I love watching our congregants in the aisles greeting each other, as well as
welcoming the newcomers and offering them a place to sit. And, at the end of the
service the same warmth is offered. Making people feel welcome, picking up on their
moods, and noticing little details are all essential for a good experience and wanting to
come again. That is what makes a room more than a room!
